The Divine Calling of Moses and What It Teaches Every Christian – Pastor Christian Gisanura

On March 14, 2026, Christian Gisanura reflected on the calling of Moses as a representation of everyone called by God, drawing from the book of Book of Exodus 3:1–16.

The calling of Moses is one of the most powerful biblical stories showing how God calls people to serve in His work. This account, found in Exodus, demonstrates that the way God called Moses is also the way He continues to call people throughout history.

Through this calling, we see that God meets people in their ordinary lives, calls them to address the problems facing others, and assures them that He will be with them in the mission He entrusts to them.

The first thing we notice is that God calls people in the midst of their everyday lives—not only during prayer or religious activities. The Bible says: “Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God” (Exodus 3:1).

This shows that Moses was simply doing his daily work as a shepherd, not in a temple or a worship service. Yet it was in that ordinary moment that God appeared to him. This reminds us that God can encounter a person in the middle of everyday life—at work, in conversations, or in ordinary situations.

The sign of Moses’ calling was the burning bush. The Bible says: “There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up” (Exodus 3:2).

This unusual sight caught Moses’ attention and drew him closer to understand what was happening. At that moment, God called out to him, saying, “Moses, Moses.” And he replied, “Here I am” (Exodus 3:4). This teaches us that God may sometimes use extraordinary signs to draw our attention, but His ultimate purpose is to speak to us and give us a message.

When God calls someone, He gives them a mission intended to address the needs of people. God said to Moses: “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering” (Exodus 3:7).

Later God said, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). This shows that a calling comes with responsibility to help others. God calls a person to become part of the solution to a problem affecting people.

However, those who are called often feel fear or doubt themselves. Moses also questioned God, saying: “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11).

This statement shows that Moses felt incapable of fulfilling the task God had given him. Yet God reassured him, saying: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). This teaches us that God does not call people because of their abilities; rather, He calls those He chooses and then gives them the ability to accomplish His work.

Another important aspect of this calling is that God reveals who He is. Moses asked God: “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” (Exodus 3:13).

God answered him, saying: “I AM WHO I AM… This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). This name shows that God is the eternal One who exists forever and has the power to fulfill all His promises.

Furthermore, God never sends a person alone. He provides support and people who will help accomplish the mission. Later we see that God gave Moses his brother Aaron to assist him in speaking and delivering the message to the people. This shows that God’s work is not meant to be carried out by one person alone; God prepares partners who help fulfill His purpose.

In concluding his teaching, Pastor Christian Gisanura explained that the calling of Moses is a reflection of the calling of every believer. God still calls people today in their ordinary lives, inviting them to respond to the needs of others and assuring them of His presence.

Even when a person feels inadequate, God promises His help because He is the one who gives the ability. That is why every believer should be willing to become an instrument in God’s hands, allowing Him to use them in sharing the message of salvation and helping others experience a better life in Christ.
