Rwanda starts Vaccination against Marburg

The Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana has announced that from this Sunday, October 6, 2024, Rwanda will start Marburg Epidemic vaccination activities.

When he was in an interview with the media, the Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana said that the vaccines have arrived in Rwanda, and the immunization of Rwandans is going to follow. “To examine them, they are preparing them and everything related to them. Today we begin to immunize those who are most at risk of contracting this disease, including doctors and others who have come in contact with Marburg patients."

Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana emphasized that the vaccine they are going to give to Rwandans has been thoroughly tested and is sure that it will not have any side effects on those who will be vaccinated. It was used in Uganda, last year, it was used in Kenya, in the United States of America in the city of Ireland.

He continued by announcing that Rwanda received 700 doses of vaccines at the beginning but there is hope to get more in a short time. It is the Sabin Vaccine produced by the Sabin Vaccine Institute, Washington, D.C. in the United States.

Minister said that so far about 1700 tests have been taken and today about 2000 have been taken. Currently there is only one PCR method, which is used to test for Marburg virus. "When you don’t show symptoms often the test does not show that you have the disease, the PCR test we take starts to be ’positive’ when you start showing symptoms."

Dr. Brian Chirombo, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Rwanda, said: "The WHO is there, it has been working with the Government of Rwanda for a long time in the fight against epidemics and if we work together we will succeed.

We know that the epidemic we are dealing with has affected medical workers, if they get infected they will not treat our people again, so we have to deal with the epidemic to protect our doctors and people.”

Statistics show that 46 people were diagnosed with the Marburg Epidemic, of which 29 are being treated while 12 died, mostly medical workers. There are 5 people who have recovered from Marburg since arriving in Rwanda.
