Living a Spiritual Life and Overcoming the Flesh – Pastor Christian Gisanura

In a sermon delivered on April 21, 2026, Pastor Christian Gisanura spoke about the crucial difference between living a spiritual life and living according to the flesh, drawing from the Bible passage Epistle to the Romans 8:1–6.

He explained that although many people identify as Christians, not all of them live lives led by the Spirit of God. Instead, some are still controlled by the flesh, which leads to struggles and weakens their testimony.

Referring to Scripture, he quoted: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1), and added: “Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2).

He emphasized that being in Christ means being freed from the power of sin, but this freedom is only experienced by those who live according to the Spirit rather than the flesh.

Pastor Gisanura pointed out that one of the biggest challenges today is that some individuals hold respected positions in the church—such as pastors, priests, or apostles—yet are still overcome by the flesh. He stated, “Being spiritual is not a title; it is the victory over the flesh.”

He described the flesh as the root cause of sinful behavior, explaining that it leads people into lust, corruption, theft, or immorality, even when they appear respectable outwardly.

He further noted that the law alone could not transform human nature, but God accomplished this through Jesus Christ, as stated in Romans 8:3: “For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son…”
The ultimate purpose, he said, is for believers to live not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit, as highlighted in Romans 8:4.

Explaining this distinction further, Pastor Gisanura said that a person’s life is shaped by what they focus on. “Where your mind is focused is where your life goes,” he said, echoing Romans 8:5, which teaches that those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

He warned that the flesh leads to death—not only physical death, but also spiritual separation from God. In contrast, a life led by the Spirit brings life and peace, as stated in Romans 8:6.

In his teaching, he also reminded listeners that a human being is essentially a spirit living in a body, and therefore must choose which spirit to follow. “A person can be influenced by different spirits, but has the authority to choose which spirit leads them,” he said.

He cautioned against evil influences that can mislead people, while emphasizing that the Holy Spirit empowers believers to overcome the flesh. Through prayer and surrender to God, he said, the Holy Spirit strengthens individuals to conquer their weaknesses.

He gave examples of people who possess great talent or intelligence but still fall into shameful acts because they have not overcome the flesh. “No matter how knowledgeable someone is, if the flesh is not defeated, it will eventually bring them down,” he warned.

In conclusion, Pastor Gisanura encouraged people to examine themselves and recognize the nature they are living by, instead of justifying their behavior by saying, “That’s just how I am.” He urged them to allow God to transform them.

He reminded the audience that God desires to restore people to their original state—pure and full of life—and called on believers to avoid sin and seek the Holy Spirit through prayer in order to live a blessed life both on earth and in eternity.

He concluded by stressing that being a Christian is not about words or positions, but about a transformed life—one that overcomes the flesh and is led by the Spirit of God, which brings true peace and life.
