Would a Christian be sinning by using a robot designed to act like a wife?

As the lines between artificial intelligence and human intimacy continue to blur, new ethical and spiritual questions are emerging, particularly among people of faith.

In Shenzhen, a leading tech hub in China, the company Starpery Technology has developed and released over 500 AI-powered humanoid robots designed to perform duties typically associated with wives. These include home chores, conversational companionship, and even sexual services.

These lifelike robots, often referred to as AI wife bots, are sold for approximately $3,000 USD and come equipped with silicone skin, smart home compatibility, and developing capabilities for emotional interaction.

The company’s CEO, Evan Lee, confirmed that newer models will be lighter, more intelligent, and capable of performing tasks like cleaning and cooking by 2030. The robots are primarily marketed to single men in China, where the gender imbalance has created a long-standing shortage of potential female partners.

But as the technology becomes more lifelike and accessible, Christians are beginning to ask deeper questions: Is it a sin to own or use such a robot, especially for sexual gratification? And if there is no human involved, is it really adultery or fornication?

Although these robots are not human, the core issue for Christians is not merely physical but spiritual. In Matthew 5:28, Jesus says: “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

This implies that sin is not limited to physical acts between two people but also includes intentional desire and internal motivation. If a Christian, particularly one who is unmarried, uses an AI robot as a sexual surrogate, the act may still fall under sexual immorality, even if there is no human partner involved.

Scripture consistently calls Christians to honor God with their bodies. In 1 Corinthians 6:18–20, Paul writes: “Flee from sexual immorality... Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit...? Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

By this standard, using a robot to satisfy sexual urges outside of a marital relationship could violate biblical principles, not because the robot is human, but because the act still reflects lust, self-indulgence, and a substitute for God-ordained intimacy.

In Shenzhen, where Starpery’s AI bots are built and distributed, the popularity of these machines is growing, not just due to the gender gap, but also due to a rising culture of loneliness, social isolation, and the commodification of relationships.

Some users say they prefer robots because there are “no arguments, no emotional pressure, and no rejection.” But from a Christian worldview, this might reflect a spiritual crisis, not just a social or relational one.

While society may see this as progress or innovation, the Church is prompted to consider deeper questions: Is this drawing people closer to genuine, loving relationships? Or is it leading them into a more isolated, self-centered existence?

For Christians, sin isn’t always about what’s legal or physical, it’s about the condition of the heart and the intent behind our actions. Using a robot in place of a spouse for emotional or sexual fulfillment may not involve another person, but it likely involves lust, self-gratification, and a withdrawal from God’s design for human connection.

As such, while these machines might offer comfort, pleasure, or convenience, they could also represent a quiet but significant compromise in the life of faith. For the Christian seeking holiness, the question may not be “Is it technically a sin?” but rather, “Does this honor God?”
