To Overcome Trials, One Must Know the Word of God – Pastor Christian Gisanura

In his sermon on February 23, 2026, Pastor Christian Gisanura focused on the trials that Jesus faced, emphasizing that every Christian will encounter tests, and the solution is found in the Word of God.

The message was based on Matthew 4:3-11: The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took Him to the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down, for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You,’ and, ‘They will lift You up in their hands, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and said, “All these I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus said to him, “Away from Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”

Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Pastor Gisanura emphasized that the Christian life is not a path free from trials. If you are a child of God, you will face testing, just as Jesus was tested. The enemy constantly seeks to lead God’s people into failure, often targeting their needs and desires.

Jesus was tested in areas of hunger, self-glorification, and the pursuit of earthly power and glory. Similarly, Christians encounter trials in daily life, but the key is that Jesus sought solutions in the Word of God, not in His own reasoning or worldly methods.

Every Christian must understand that worldly ways are often full of sin and deception. To overcome trials, one must have knowledge of God’s Word, because true guidance comes from knowing and trusting God. Without this knowledge, people stumble, unaware that God is the ultimate source of solutions.

Some believe that prayer alone is sufficient, neglecting the study and understanding of Scripture. Praying without God’s direction is not enough; prayers must align with His will. Before presenting your requests, first seek what you know God approves.

A person is sustained not by bread or works alone, but by what God has spoken. God is not just a refuge for the troubled; He is the source of wisdom, strength, and guidance for all areas of life.

Even the enemy once tried to misuse God’s Word to deceive Jesus. This teaches us that even truth can be twisted when applied wrongly. Scripture is always true, but if misused for pride or to test God, it becomes a trap.

Faith is not passive—it is not waiting for miracles without action. If you pray for employment, you must also seek the job. If you pray for a spouse, you must actively pursue that relationship. Genuine faith is accompanied by action; without action, faith is lifeless.

Another major trial is the lure of honor and fame. The enemy may offer worldly wealth or recognition, but these always come with the risk of idolatry.

Many fall into the trap of worshiping money, success, or fame, thinking these will give them value. In reality, the result is the loss of fellowship with God. A Christian must know that worshiping God alone is the only source of lasting life.

Jesus also overcame the trial of doubting His identity. The enemy sought to make Him question if He truly was the Son of God. Likewise, we may face voices that attempt to deceive us into validating ourselves through the wrong means. But the value of a child of God is not based on appearances, but on what God says about them.

When a person knows the Word of God, loves it, and applies it correctly—as Jesus said, “It is written”—they can overcome trials. Christians are not called to test God; they are called to trust Him and obey. Trials will come, but victory lies in knowing the truth and standing upon it.
