Steven Kabarisa – A Gospel artist using music to preach hope despite disability

Steven Kabarisa is an emerging gospel artist from Rwanda who has overcome significant life challenges, including a disability, to use music as a platform for sharing messages of faith, hope, and transformation.

Steven Kabarisa currently has four songs, including two with music videos and two audio-only tracks. His passion for music began in childhood when he would stay at home listening to the radio while his parents went to work in the fields. This early exposure inspired his love for singing.

Later, while in school, he actively participated in singing competitions, where he consistently performed well, represented his school, and eventually excelled at diocesan-level competitions.

Kabarisa also expanded his artistic talent into acting, featuring in productions under Ganza Films, which helped him grow his creative career beyond music.

His life story is deeply shaped by medical challenges. Born in difficult circumstances, doctors initially feared for his survival. Although he was born alive, he remained physically weak during early childhood. By the age of two, it became clear that he had a disability that affected his ability to sit or move like other children.

He spent nearly 12 to 13 years receiving treatment at Gahini Hospital before returning home. He began formal education at the age of 13, a turning point that also marked the rise of his musical talent.

His songs carry strong social and spiritual messages. His first song, “Igitabo” (The Book), reflects a mother’s final advice to her child. Another song, “Agatonyanga” (A Drop of Water), addresses the dangers of teenage pregnancy and encourages young girls to avoid distractions that could derail their future.

His latest and most significant work, “Shimwa Mana” (Thank You God), is a gospel testimony of his life journey and faith in God, which he considers the foundation of his ministry.

Despite his disability, Steven emphasizes independence and personal development. He can now sit in a wheelchair, take care of himself, and perform basic daily tasks. He strongly encourages parents to support children with disabilities early so they can develop their abilities and potential.

Looking ahead, he dreams of establishing a non-governmental organization to support children with disabilities, as well as building schools and other support institutions. He aspires to become a major gospel artist and a social influencer contributing to the development of Rwanda and Africa.

He encourages people to remain strong despite challenges, saying that faith, talent, and perseverance have helped him reach where he is today.
