Rwanda: Religions and churches have been appreciated for their role in lifting people out of poverty

The Director General of the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), Dr. Doris Picard Uwicyeza announced that Rwandans highly appreciate the development activities carried out by churches and organizations based on faith at a rate of 83.7%.

Dr. Doris Picard Uwicyeza thanked the organizations based on the tradition and the international organizations for the important role they play in carrying out activities aimed at removing people from poverty as the first responsibility of the Government of Rwanda.

She emphasized that the Church in collaboration with these international non-governmental organizations would give great confidence that can eradicate poverty in families. She also emphasized on the research conducted by RGB where it was found that Rwandans highly appreciate the development activities carried out by churches and international non-governmental organizations.

She said that these activities were very effective at the rate of 87.3% where in education, the religious communities established many schools and around Rwanda 14 hospitals and health centers were built, as well as these non-governmental organizations, churches and religions pays for health insurance (Mutuelle de santé) for poor families.

Dr. Doris Picard announced this at the "Empowerment Summit 2024" which brought together religious leaders, churches and traditional organizations. It was a meeting hosted by Compassion International Rwanda, which had the theme "The Role of the Church in the Development of Communities".

Dr. Doris thanked the organizers of this meeting and said that she was satisfied to see that the government was given a place in this meeting that combines religions and churches as well as organizations based on traditional and non-governmental organizations. She said, "RGB assures the partnership of strength and willingness to work together to do everything possible so that Rwandan communities live well and develop".

The General Director of Compassion International in Rwanda, Pastor John Nkubana, spoke about the strength of the partnership between Compassion International and about 444 Christian churches working in all regions of Rwanda where they help children and their families about 117,211.

The Senior Pastor of ADEPR, Rev. Esaie Ndayizeye, spoke about why it is important for the Church to take care of the development of the family. He said that if a family has the problem, it leads the impacts on other families. He said that the main reason why the Church should take care of families is that ’The family is a project of God himself.’

He said, "The church has a responsibility to build a happy community with full development". Rev. Isaie Ndayizeye continued to return to the important activities of ADEPR, which includes teaching literacy to Rwandans who are deprived of that opportunity.

He said that what they have put in their efforts is to speed up the resolution of conflicts in families where the church encourages those who are not legally married to do so in order to build a family that lives in peace. He also talked about the program to help girls with unplanned pregnancies and to fight drug addiction among young people.

The "Empowerment Summit 2024" meeting was held at the Kigali Serena Hotel on November 05-06, 2024, focusing on the important role of the Church in eradicating poverty in families. On the first day, it was considered why it is important for the Church to be involved, and on the second day, how the Church could do it.
