How a Kitchen Knife Gave Birth to the Song "Child of God" by Gloire ATS – An Interesting Testimony

Inspiration often comes from unexpected places, and for Rwandan-born gospel singer Gloire Nkundayesu, known as Gloire ATS (A Toi Seigneur), a simple kitchen accident turned into the genesis of a profound worship song.

His new album, Child of God – Enfant de Dieu, released on November 7, 2024, includes the title track Child of God. This song, deeply personal and faith-driven, originated from an accident that left Gloire reflecting on his identity as a child of God.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gloire shared, “It is a long story that started with a vacation at the end of June 2024. On the second day, I went to Walmart, bought some fruits and a little knife to carry in my bag.

We had fun all day, but at the end of the day, my daughter asked for something to eat before we returned to the hostel. I reached into my bag for an orange and started cutting it. Somehow, I turned my head, and I cut through my finger—this little finger here. I bled a lot.”

The Accident and Its Aftermath
The injury, which seemed minor at first, quickly escalated. Gloire was rushed to emergency care, transferred to a clinic, and eventually sent to a specialist who performed surgery to repair the severed nerves. Despite the operation, Gloire explained, “Even today, I can’t feel very well the end of my finger.”

As a bass guitarist, this injury posed a significant challenge. Unable to play his primary instrument during recovery, Gloire turned to the piano. “The doctor told me I could start using my finger again after three weeks, but I didn’t want to spend a whole month without playing an instrument. So, I started playing the piano,” he shared.

Though he described his piano skills as intermediate or beginner-level, he used this time to connect with God. “When I go to the piano, it’s to help me pray. When I’m playing the notes, I’m praying at the same time,” he explained.

The Birth of “Child of God”
During one of these prayer sessions, Gloire found solace in scripture, particularly John 1:12: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” He recalled, “Somehow within my soul, I felt a voice saying, ‘See, even though you had an accident, you are loved by God.’”

The experience reminded him of Job’s unwavering faith amidst suffering. “It’s like Job, when the devil wanted him to deny God, but Job continued to trust in Him. In real life, we have struggles and difficulties, but they don’t remove our identity. My identity is as a child of God.”

Reflecting on his emotions, Gloire shared, “I was playing piano, praying, and reading the book of John when the melody started forming in my heart. It wasn’t well-structured at first, but I began translating what I felt into music.”

This moment of divine inspiration led to the creation of Child of God, a song that declares believers’ identity in Christ, no matter the trials they face.
