Good News! Chinese citizens are embracing Jesus like farmers buying plowshares

Faith in the furnace: how Chinese citizens are embracing Jesus like farmers buying plowshares

In a country where faith is often placed under fire, something remarkable is happening behind closed doors. Despite China’s sweeping restrictions on religion-especially unregistered Christian gatherings-millions of people are boldly turning to Jesus Christ, forming what has become one of the largest underground faith movements in the world.

Under China’s current laws, religious groups must register with the government and operate under the close watch of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Churches that operate outside this system-commonly known as house churches or underground churches-are considered illegal and are frequently subject to raids, arrests, and forced closures.

Even so, the gospel is spreading.

Reports from Christian watchdog organizations and field missionaries reveal that evangelical Christianity is growing rapidly, especially in urban areas like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. It’s estimated that over 100 million Chinese citizens may be worshipping in secret. Many of these believers gather in small apartments, basements, or offices to study the Bible, pray, and share testimonies.

“We may be hidden, but our faith is not dead,” said one underground pastor who spoke anonymously for safety reasons. “God is building His church in silence, and no force can stop it.”

This hidden revival is especially vibrant among students, intellectuals, and professionals who are disillusioned with materialism and authoritarianism. For many, the Christian message of love, hope, and eternal purpose is filling a spiritual void that the state cannot address.

Though believers face serious risks-ranging from surveillance and job loss to imprisonment-their numbers keep growing. And their resolve remains unshaken.

According to insights shared by Christian media platform Pills_of_faith, faith is quietly flourishing in China despite increasing government crackdowns: China’s underground churches are rising.
Despite tight government control, Christianity—especially evangelical movements—is growing fast in urban China. Over 100 million people may be worshipping… even if the state says otherwise.

“In China, Christ is being embraced like farmers buying plowshares—not for war, but for planting a future harvest of faith.”

This movement may be underground, but it is anything but weak. In the fiery furnace of oppression, faith is being refined, multiplied, and made bold.
