Understanding Israel Mbonyi's Swahili Song “Sitamuacha,” Line by Line in English

Rwandan gospel star Israel Mbonyi, one of the most influential musicians in the country, has released a new song titled “Sitamuacha,” a Swahili phrase meaning “I will not leave Him.”

The song carries a deep message of faith, endurance, and commitment to God, expressing that nothing can separate the believer from the love of Christ.

Intro

Nilie mtambua, Hakuna kitatutenganisha
Hakuna atakae ninyang’anya taji langu
(I have known Him; nothing will separate us.
No one can take away my crown.)

Mbonyi begins by declaring his personal relationship with God. He emphasizes that nothing, neither people nor challenges, can take away his spiritual reward, symbolized by the “crown,” which represents eternal victory in heaven.
Ayeee, nimeshika sitamuacha
(Yes, I have held on to Him; I will not leave Him.)

Here, he affirms his decision to remain steadfast in his faith, no matter what happens. It is a vow of loyalty and unshakable trust in God.

Verse 1

Mtini usipo chanua, mizabibu isitoe matunda
Bado nitamfurahiya wamilele bwana wangu
(Even if the fig tree does not blossom and the vines bear no fruit,
I will still rejoice in my Lord forever.)

This line echoes Habakkuk 3:17–18, showing joy that is not based on material blessings. Mbonyi expresses unwavering faith, rejoicing in God even in times of lack and hardship.
Haya yanitia moyo, ni mchungaji wa upendo
Aliaca tisini na tisa, kaja kutafuta moja.
(These words encourage me; He is the Shepherd of love
Who left ninety-nine to look for the one that was lost.)

This refers to Luke 15:4, the parable of the lost sheep. Mbonyi highlights Jesus as the loving Shepherd who cares for each individual so deeply that He seeks out even one lost soul.

Pre-Chorus

Amenibadilishia huzuni, aka nipa furaha ya kweli
(He turned my sorrow into real joy.)

He speaks of the transformation that comes from knowing Christ — how pain and sadness are replaced by lasting joy.
Bahati gani niliyo nayo, kuwa Murithi na Kristo.
(What a blessing it is to have Christ as my Shepherd.)
Mbonyi acknowledges the great privilege of being guided and protected by Jesus, the true Shepherd.

Chorus

Kipi kitanitenga na upendo wake
Maafa na majanga oh hayawezi
Ya leo na yajayo nayo hayawezi
Ayeee nimemshika sitamuachaa

(What can separate me from His love?
Tragedies and calamities — they cannot.
The things of today and tomorrow — they cannot.
Yes, I have held on to Him; I will not leave Him.)

The chorus is rooted in Romans 8:38–39, where Paul declares that nothing can separate believers from the love of God. Mbonyi sings this as a confession of faith and steadfastness, assuring that no trial will drive him away from Christ.

Bridge

Nimemuona usiku na mchana,
Mkono wake umenitendea,
Kila mlima aliusambaza.
(I have seen Him by night and by day;
His hand has worked for me,
Every mountain He has flattened.)
Mbonyi testifies that God has been with him at all times — in darkness and in light. “Mountains” symbolize the obstacles in life, and he celebrates how God has removed them all.

“Sitamuacha” is a song of faith, perseverance, and deep devotion. It reminds believers that even when life is hard, God remains faithful. Mbonyi’s message is one of encouragement, that Jesus, the loving Shepherd, never abandons His people, and in return, believers should hold on to Him without wavering.

Israel Mbonyi is Rwanda’s leading gospel musician, known for his powerful lyrics and heartfelt worship songs such as Nina Siri, Nitaamini, Sikiliza, and many others.

Sitamuacha showcases his poetic mastery and spiritual maturity, a declaration of unwavering commitment to God, no matter the circumstances.
