The Covenant of Jesus and the Church – Pastor Christian Gisanura

On March 9, 2026, Pastor Christian Gisanura delivered the concluding message of his series on the covenant, titling it “The Covenant of Jesus and the Church.”

He explained this covenant based on Ephesians 5:20–30, highlighting the relationship between Jesus Christ and His Church.

He began by emphasizing that a Christian’s life should be marked by daily gratitude to God. As stated in Ephesians 5:20: "Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

He continued to show that Christian life is rooted in mutual submission among believers. Ephesians 5:21 says: "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."

Pastor Gisanura explained that the Apostle Paul used the imagery of marriage to illustrate the relationship between Christ and the Church.

The Bible says: "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the Church, his body, of which he is the Savior." (Ephesians 5:22–23)

He further read: "Now as the Church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5:24)

Addressing husbands, he highlighted that the Bible commands men to love their wives just as Christ loved the Church. Ephesians 5:25 says: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her."

He explained that Christ sacrificed Himself to sanctify the Church. Ephesians 5:26–27 says:
"To make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant Church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless."

Pastor Gisanura emphasized that this love should also be reflected in the home. The Bible states: "In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself." (Ephesians 5:28)

And in Ephesians 5:29–30: "After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the Church—because we are members of his body."

He explained that these verses illustrate the covenant between Christ and the Church. Christians are called to submit to Christ, who sanctifies them through His sacrificial love.

Pastor Gisanura reminded the congregation that no one can transform themselves by their own strength; it requires surrendering to Christ to experience true change.

He also emphasized that God has a purpose for every person, and wherever one finds themselves in life is not by accident.

Each situation is an opportunity to serve God and extend His message across all areas, including business, medicine, politics, and other fields.

He concluded by encouraging Christians to pray for God’s guidance so His kingdom can reach every place, and he prayed for peace in Africa—particularly Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and across the world.
