President Kagame Speaks on the DRC Crisis: A Call for Truth and Justice

On February 3, 2025, President Paul Kagame addressed the ongoing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in an interview with CNN.

His words carried a strong message of truth, accountability, and the need for a just resolution to the suffering endured by millions. As Christians, we are called to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8).

A Crisis Rooted in Injustice

The conflict in Eastern DRC has been marked by violence, displacement, and persecution, particularly targeting communities that share cultural and ethnic ties with Rwanda.

President Kagame emphasized that Rwanda is not the cause of this crisis, stating, “This war was not started by Rwanda; it was started by the DRC.” He pointed out that thousands have been displaced and many have suffered simply because of their identity.

As believers, we recognize that injustice and persecution grieve the heart of God. Proverbs 31:8-9 instructs us to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” and to “defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

The suffering of people in Eastern DRC calls for a response—not of blame-shifting, but of genuine efforts toward peace and restoration.

Truth Over Falsehoods

Kagame’s remarks highlighted the dangers of misinformation, particularly from international actors who prioritize political narratives over real solutions.

He criticized those who turn a blind eye to ongoing atrocities but react only when the situation escalates into large-scale humanitarian crises.

Jesus Himself warned against deception and urged His followers to stand for truth (John 8:32). In times of conflict, discerning truth from propaganda is crucial.

It is not enough to accept surface-level accusations; we must seek wisdom and justice in all things.

The Church’s Role in Peacemaking

With war raging in Eastern DRC, many Christians in the region are suffering. Churches have been destroyed, congregations have been scattered, and worship has become dangerous.

However, Scripture reminds us that God hears the cries of His people. Psalm 34:17 declares, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles.”

The Church must rise as a beacon of peace. We are called to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) and intercessors for those in distress.

Let us pray fervently for peace in the DRC, for the protection of the innocent, and for leaders to pursue justice with wisdom and integrity.

A Call to Action

President Kagame’s message is a challenge to the world: rather than engaging in blame games, it is time to seek real solutions to the crisis.

For believers, this is also a call to action. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to “pray for all people, asking God to help them; intercede on their behalf and give thanks for them.”

As we witness the suffering in the DRC, let us:
• Pray without ceasing for the victims of war and those in leadership.
• Speak truth boldly, refusing to be swayed by false narratives.
• Extend compassion to refugees and displaced communities.
• Seek justice through advocacy, support for humanitarian efforts, and standing against oppression.

A Future of Hope

Despite the darkness of war, hope remains. God is a God of restoration, and He promises that justice will prevail. “He will judge between nations and will settle disputes for many peoples” (Isaiah 2:4).

As we stand in faith, let us trust in God’s plan for peace and work diligently to bring healing to those affected by conflict.

Now, more than ever, the body of Christ must unite in prayer and action for the people of the DRC. May His justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24).
