Some people think that those who lived under the Old Covenant (before Jesus came) went to heaven without Christ. But that is not true. No one can enter heaven without Jesus Christ, because He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). This has been true since the beginning of creation.
Although people in the Old Covenant received forgiveness through animal sacrifices, the Bible tells us that those sacrifices could not truly take away sin or make anyone holy. Hebrews 10:1-4 explains that the sacrifices were only a shadow of the good things to come and could not make the worshipers perfect.
However, in Hebrews chapter 11, we read that the people of the Old Covenant like Abraham, Moses, Jacob, Joseph, and many others were justified by faith, not by the law. It also says they were looking forward to something greater that was coming, which is Jesus Christ. They died with that hope in their hearts.
So, the difference is this:
• They believed in the promise of Christ who was yet to come.
• We believe in Christ who has already come and fulfilled the promise.
In both cases, salvation is only through Christ. The Old Covenant saints were saved by faith in what was coming, and we are saved by faith in what has already been done.
