How to keep honoring God in your relationship

In today’s world, society promotes its own ideas about love and dating. However, God has given us something far better, principles that not only honor Him but also lead to relationships that are deep, stable, and fulfilling. Here are seven key ways to keep God at the center of your love life:

1. Seek God Above All Else

Before pursuing a romantic relationship, strengthen your personal walk with Christ. A strong foundation of faith helps you recognize the right person to love and guides how you date.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

2. Set Boundaries That Reflect Your Faith

In a relationship, it’s essential to set physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries. These protect your relationship and help you maintain a love that honors God.

“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” – 2 Timothy 2:22

3. Choose Character Over Chemistry

Attraction matters, but true love is built on more than feelings. Choose someone who shares your faith, values, and commitment to Christ.

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14

4. Pray for Your Relationship

Invite God into your relationship through prayer. Pray together and for each other, asking for wisdom, patience, and direction as you grow in faith and love.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5–6

5. Seek Godly Counsel

It’s wise to seek guidance from parents, pastors, or spiritually mature people. Their advice, rooted in Scripture, can help you make sound decisions.

Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14

6. Honor God Through Purity

God calls us to avoid sexual immorality and live in purity, both in body and spirit. Purity shows true love and respect for God and your partner.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3

7. Keep Christ at the Center

Worship together, pray together, and study the Bible as a couple. When Christ is at the center, your relationship gains purpose and spiritual depth.

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” – Colossians 3:17

True love has meaning only when it is rooted in God. When both partners put God first, their relationship becomes a testimony of faith and peace. God desires your love life to glorify Him and bring joy and spiritual growth to your life.
