The Leader of the Catholic Church in the World, Pope Francis, has appointed Father Jean Bosco Ntagungira as Bishop of the Diocese of Butare, replacing Rukamba Philippe who has retired.
The announcement put out by the Pope’s Press Office on this Wednesday is about these changes in the Church of Rwanda. Father Ntagungira was previously the Senior Priest of Regina Pacis Parish in the Archdiocese of Kigali. Born on April 3, 1964, he studied at Rutongo Minor Seminary before continuing in Nyakibanda.
He was ordained to the priesthood on August 1, 1993 in the Archdiocese of Kigali. After becoming a priest, he became the Director of Studies at the Minor Seminary of Ndera from 1993 to 1994. He was awarded a Master’s Degree in Ecclesiastical Law after completing his studies at the University of Rome in Italy (Pontifical Lateran University) where he studied since from 1994 to 2001.
He was the Director of Missions in the Archdiocese of Kigali from 2001 to 2002 before becoming the Director of the Minor Seminary of St. Vincent of Ndera. He was in the leadership of the Church Court, Kigali Chamber since 2002. Now he is Butare Diocese’s Boshop.
