Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nyundo Mwumvaneza Anaclet said that in order to facilitate the mission in Western Province, they continue to request the establishment of Kibuye Diocese.
Bishop Mwumvaneza confirmed this on August 9, 2023, during the talks between the representative leaders of the catholic Church in Provinces and its leadership. It is a discussion focused on coordinating efforts in community care for benefits of citizen.
On February 14, 1952, Pope Pius XII established the diocese of Nyundo, which went from the Nyabihu region to Ruhwa, where Rwanda and Burundi share a border.
On October 14, 1981, Nyundo Diosese gave birth to Cyangungu, remained with Nyabihu, Rubavu, Rutsiro, Karongi and two sectors of Nyamasheke district and Cyangungu was given Rusizi and Nyamasheke.
In the following six years, the request to establish the Diocese of Kibuye began and is still ongoing. The request to establish a diocese is approved by the Supreme Leader of the Catholic Church in the World. Pope Paul II was the one who approved the establishment of the diocese of Cyangugu.
Bishop Mwumvaneza told IGIHE that the Diocese of Nyundo is very big and that is why in 1987 Bishop Wenceslas Kalibushi who led the Diocese of Nyundo requested that the Diocese of Kibuye be established.
He said, “The decision to establish a diocese comes from the leadership of the Catholic Church in Rome, but there are things they are looking at as well. We continue to show them that we need a diocese, so we are still waiting if we have a chance they will give it to us, because it is very necessary".
The criteria for deciding whether a place is suitable for a Diocese include whether it will be self-supporting, whether the diocese has enough Christians, whether the diocese has enough priests.
Bishop Mwumvaneza said, "We have almost 99% of the requirements, that’s why we always ask to see that they listen to us and give us the Diocese of Kibuye".
There are nine Catholic dioceses in Rwanda including the Archdiocese of Kigali, Butare Diocese, Cyangugu Diocese, Gikongoro Diocese, Kabgayi Diocese, Kibungo Diocese, Nyundo Diocese, Ruhengeri Diocese and Byumba Diocese.
