The initiative comes amid increasing concern over the impact of illicit alcoholic beverages and narcotic substances, which have claimed dozens of lives and left many others with permanent disabilities in Rwanda during the first half of 2026.

On August 5, 2026, musicians, entertainment journalists, investors, and government officials gathered in Kigali for the inaugural Industry Talk, a forum organized by members of Rwanda’s creative industry to discuss how artists can contribute to national development and use their influence to inspire positive social change.

The event brought together representatives from several government institutions, including the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, the Ministry of Health, the Office of the Government Spokesperson, and the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

Artists acknowledged that their popularity gives them a unique opportunity—and responsibility—to influence young people by promoting healthy lifestyles and discouraging substance abuse.

Popular DJ Grace Divine Iradukunda (DJ Ira) challenged the widespread belief that entertainers need drugs or alcohol to perform at their best.

"Our talent, discipline, and passion for what we do are enough. We don’t need drugs to succeed," she said.

Musician Bushali (Safi Niyomungeri) urged fellow young people to change their behavior, warning that the country’s leadership has become increasingly concerned about the situation.

"We need to correct ourselves. Our leaders are working hard to build a better future for us, and we shouldn’t let them down," he said.

Entertainment consultant Gaël Karomba (Coach Gaël) emphasized that substance abuse has no place in a successful career, especially for artists who serve as role models for millions of young fans.

He noted that many of Rwanda’s most successful artists have sustained long careers because they have remained disciplined and avoided drug abuse.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana described musicians as "hidden doctors," explaining that music is already being used in healthcare settings to support patients with mental health conditions.

He encouraged artists to continue producing uplifting songs with positive lyrics that contribute to the well-being of society, especially children and young people.

The Industry Talk forum attracted several prominent figures from Rwanda’s entertainment industry, including Israel Mbonyi, Tom Close, Knowless Butera, Jules Sentore, Nel Ngabo, Intore Massamba, Alex Muyoboke, Clement Ishimwe, and many others, all reaffirming their commitment to using their platforms to promote positive values and support Rwanda’s fight against substance abuse.
